Industrial Revolution
The Industrial Revolution and human rights
The beginning of technology, before the 1700’s most people farmed without the use of tractors to grow all of their own food. With clothing, their neighbours made their clothes for them, and they would trade certain items for labor or food. For traveling, they would mostly use a horse or walk.
The Industrial Revolution changed everything including farming. They changed the way they planted crops, and had new breeds of animals. This meant that farmers were able to harvest crops more efficiently, so fewer people had to farm. Many of these people ended up working in factories. A good thing about the factories is that they were able to make new products cheaply and quickly. The bad thing about the factories is mainly having to do with the dangerous working conditions, with a really small pay. Small children also worked in these dangerous working conditions.
The economy changed from local to global trading. With progress brought a surprise to the people as many were not aware at the time that if you mess with nature, you will be penalized for your actions. With messing with nature, they never thought about things that could happen like pollution, global warming, and the depleting ozone layer. This eventually led to problems that today, we deal with.

What was happening around human rights?
Child labor including children as young as 5 or 6 years old, was common and they worked 12 hours a day.
Parents needed their children to work to survive and the children worked in very dangerous conditions and only the rich kids went to school.

What was significant about these stages of the development on our understanding of human rights?
When the Industrial Revolution started, people were forced to work until their death. Gradually, people were rewarded with rights and laws called Factory Acts.

How did our views of people change?
I think the rich changed their point of view and they realized they had to have laws to have less people dying to have more money rolling in.
Women were part of a cottage system and family business until factories took over and then were abused and considered cheap labor.

Were there any limitations to the human rights "developed"?
Yes. Their rights came into law very slowly. Gradually, everyone’s lives became better when cities were more habitable and children started their education.

What effects do you think these events have on us today?
When we look back, we discover that many children were forced to work in dangerous condition leaving us to believe we are lucky. We weren’t around at the time when child labour was ACTUALLY real. I believe the we should be thankful for what we have today.
