ANCIENT human rights
Cyrus the Great. An ancient ruler and the the first to have the great in the name. Now, the context of the time was that for people taking over they would enslave the current citizens, but Cyrus was unique and he freed people from there evil rulers and respected peoples cultures, religions and beliefs. When he died, he was put in a humble tomb, which, again divided him from other rulers at that time, who would have made sure they had extravagant tombs made out of gold or something like that. He improved human lives by freeing everyone and by putting the ideas of revolutions in the future generations heads.
Ancient Greek and Roman Democracy. Now, In ancient Greece the only actual democracy was in the city state of Athens. At the time the rest of of Greece had monarchy and republics, so lets call it an Athenian democracy. It's because of this democracy that Athens grew to be the most powerful and Largest state in Greece. The way it worked was that every year an assembly of all the citizens Elected three nobles to run the state, then after a year the nobles became advisers to the next leaders. At the time the only limitations to human rights were to females, as only citizens had rights, and foreigners and females could not become citizens. Now at about 600 B.C. the city state suffered major money problems. In order to pay the money they owed, farmers gave some of there crops to landowners then sold themselves to slavery. Later a leader took a stand to help solve the political and money problems. Solon. A respected leader, decided to pass a law in the year 594 BC, that outlawed slavery based on dept and then cancelled the slaves dept, which, in turn caused the state to avoid a revolution or a civil war. He then established 4 classes of citizen ship based off of your wealth instead of it being passed down, But only citizens of the top three classes could hold a public office, while everyone could still vote. At this time everyone who was free, an adult, and male could be citizens. Then Solon Created the Council of 400, which prepared business for the previous council. He also introduced the law that allowed any citizen to bring charges to wrongdoers. Although these acts increased participation in government, Athens was still limited as a democracy. Only citizens
could participate in government, and only about one-tenth of the population were citizens at the time. Now, with the roman democracy it was pretty much the same as the Athenian democracy.
